In the video: A British MP reveals that he has contracted HIV - "Stigma should be stopped"

Timothy Ray Brown, the first person in the world to be cured of HIV, died yesterday at the age of 54 (Tuesday) in his home, after a long battle with cancer.

Brown first developed leukemia in 2007, 12 years earlier in 1995 he was diagnosed with HIV.

When he first contracted Brown cancer, originally American, he lived in Berlin where he also received treatment that included a bone marrow transplant at a local clinic.

The doctors who treated him were astonished to find that the treatment he received was not only effective against his cancer - the leukemia had gone into remission - but also managed to cure him of HIV.

And so he became the first person in the world to be cured of the virus.

Brown's historical case was widely reported in the press around the world, although at the time he sought to maintain his anonymity and was therefore known as the 'Patient from Berlin'.

It was only 12 years later that doctors were able to replicate Brown's treatment success, and cure another patient nicknamed 'the patient from London' (until he revealed his identity - Adam Castillo) with similar treatment.

"He was like an ambassador of hope."

In an interview with the Associated Press about a year ago, Brown said he had leukemia again, and that this time the cancer was more widespread and that his condition was terminal.

For the past few months he has been receiving hospice care at his home in Palm Springs California, where he lived with his spouse.

"I'm still glad I got the treatment," Brown said in an interview referring to a bone marrow transplant in 2007. "It opened doors that didn't exist before and inspired scientists to work harder to find a cure, something many began to believe was impossible."

Complicated treatment with many risks

While he had leukemia in Berlin, Brown was treated by a local doctor named Dr. Grew Whiter, who believed that Brown's best chance of fighting cancer was through a bone marrow transplant. - If he uses a bone marrow donation from a donor who has a genetic mutation that provides natural immunity against the virus that causes AIDS.

Aside from the fact that bone marrow donations with such a mutation are quite rare, this is a complicated treatment that involves many risks.

The doctors had to completely destroy Brown's original bone marrow and then hope that the bone marrow donation would be successfully absorbed and produce an entirely new, zero - immune system in Brown's body.

The first treatment was only partially successful - the donation was successfully absorbed and even seems to have cured him of HIV, but his leukemia was still in the picture.

Brown underwent another transplant from the same donor in 2008 and this time it seems to have worked.

He was cured of both cancer and HIV.

Appropriate donations are rare, and treatment is expensive, complicated, and dangerous.

Since then, Brown has been consistently tested and found to be HIV-positive, and he used to attend medical and scientific conferences in favor of advancing AIDS research and finding a cure.

"He was like an ambassador of hope," Brown Tip's partner demonstrated.

Dr. Stephen Dix, an AIDS expert from the University of California, met Brown as part of his research work, with which Brown collaborated in advancing efforts to find a cure for AIDS. Said Dr. Dix.

"We took pieces from his gut, pieces from his lymph nodes ... every time we asked him to do something, he showed up and did everything with wonderful kindness."
