A study in more than 10 health centers - which was coordinated by the Hospital Italiano de Buenos Aires - to evaluate the efficacy

of convalescent plasma

in patients with severe coronavirus pneumonia yielded less than encouraging results.

The trial, involving 334 infected people, showed that the use of this treatment

"did not produce a significant clinical benefit

.

"

The detail of the report was leaked in networks.

The information was confirmed to

Clarín

by sources from the Hospital.

“The results of the PlasmAr study show that among hospitalized patients with Covid 19 pneumonia with criteria of severity, the use of convalescent plasma did not produce a significant clinical benefit at 7, 14 or 30 days of follow-up compared to the use of placebo ”, specifies the work.

Then, he clarifies that plasma therapy

did not aggravate the condition of the treated patients either

: "With regard to the safety profile, there were no statistical differences in terms of adverse effects compared to placebo."

These results mark "a milestone in the therapeutic strategies" for coronavirus, they add among the conclusions, since until now there was no reliable data on its efficacy.

The trial included the Central Italian Hospital (CABA), the Italian Hospital of San Justo, the Austral University Hospital, the Ramos Mejía Hospital, the Trinidad Sanatorium, the Zabala Clinic, the Agote Sanatorium, the Santa Isabel Clinic, the Hospital Británico de Rosario, the Private Hospital of Córdoba and the Zonal Hospital Ramón Carrillo de Bariloche.

334 patients with severe coronavirus pneumonias participated, who were on average 62 years old.

The majority were men (there were 31% women).

Donors were summoned by social networks and had to comply with the usual parameters for donating blood, in addition to having a high amount of antibodies.

In April, the Ministry of Health announced a strategic plan to regulate the use of convalescent plasma with the aim of integrating all the research projects related to this therapy that were beginning to emerge in different institutions.

At that time it was publicly warned that its effectiveness has not yet been proven.

There are several ongoing trials in the country on the efficacy of the use of plasma.

One of them, which takes place at the Hospital de Clínicas with about 200 patients, is applied in intermediate cases of the disease.

According to sources consulted by

Clarín

, the results obtained so far are favorable at this stage of the disease.

This week, in addition, the Buenos Aires Vice Minister of Health, Nicolás Kreplak, reported that

almost 4,000 Buenos Aires

patients with coronavirus received treatment with plasma from recovered patients and more than 1,500 donations were made.

In these cases, it is not used in serious patients, but in less severe cases and the objective is to prevent the symptoms from worsening and the infected go to a respirator.

In those cases, the initial response has been positive.
