(ANSA) - ROME, OCTOBER 01 - A new, spectacular lighting system for the Acropolis of Athens was inaugurated yesterday, a light that according to the Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis will also illuminate "the democratic principles of ancient Greece".
"The light of the 21st century now embraces the Acropolis, a celebration that goes beyond borders and languages. The values that were born here spread throughout the earth as the right answer on how to organize society," said Mitsotakis, present at the ceremony, quoted by the Hellenic media.
It was in the 5th century BC, during the rule of Pericles, that the most important monuments of the site - including the Parthenon - were completed.
The temple, one of the most famous buildings in the world, was damaged during a Venetian siege in 1687 when a powder keg inside the Parthenon was hit by a cannon and exploded.
Sponsored by the Onassis foundation, the new lighting enhances the geometry of the monuments and the fortress on which they stand, using lights of different intensity.
