SPIEGEL:
Ms. Chisholm, do you actually suffer from Beatles Syndrome?
Melanie C .:
Hahaha, what do you think?
SPIEGEL:
You have had a very successful solo career for decades, but the first thing you are asked about in every interview is the Spice Girls.
Do you ever feel like Paul McCartney must?
Melanie C .:
I hope he has found the acceptance that I now have!
Paul McCartney will never be bigger than the Beatles, despite his immense success as a solo artist - and Melanie C. will never be bigger than the Spice Girls.
You just have to take that for granted.
And of course people are obsessed: they want to know what's going on with the girls.
That's fine too.
SPIEGEL:
Acceptance is something of a keyword for this phase of your career.
What exactly does it mean for you to be able to accept yourself?
Melanie C .:
Lately a lot has been in motion for me personally.
I've learned to feel good about myself and to be proud of what I've achieved.
But it took a long time to get to that point.
I was so young when the Spice Girls started, only 20, and I was just starting to figure out who I am.
At the same time, so many people present you with expectations - how you should be, how they would like you to be - all in front of the public.
I found that very confusing at the time.
It made me feel insecure.
