The bulk purchase in a photo gallery threatens to become a disgrace for the city of Düsseldorf. There are doubts whether the pictures are worth the money.

The black-and-white photo of an eye, the eyelashes dramatically made up, including two glass tears.

The sight was photographed by the American surrealist Man Ray in Paris in 1933. But this print was not made until 1990, long after the artist's death.

Now an equally surreal dispute has broken out about whether this copy and thousands more are fit for museum use.

In total, there are 3039 photographs that the city of Düsseldorf has taken for a sum of millions.

The previous owner was Galerie Kicken Berlin AG.

The negotiations were with Annette Kicken, she is the widow of the well-known photo dealer Rudolf Kicken.

The gallery owner was celebrated for her generosity towards the Rhine metropolis, after all she only asked for money for some of the photos and gave the rest for free.

So it was decided and announced at the end of 2018.

Back then, the city of Düsseldorf secured the pictures for its Museum Kunstpalast Foundation and spread euphoria that "suddenly" one would do justice to the "status of the city of photography".
