Nobel Prize for Literature 2020: "You can't just say: Louise Glück is a feminist writer"

Nobel laureate in literature Louise Glück is almost unknown in Germany. Here, her translator Ulrike Draesner explains why this is so - and why Glück's writing has always eluded trends.

SPIEGEL:

Ms. Draesner, what did you think when you heard that Louise Glück was receiving the Nobel Prize for Literature?

Ulrike Draesner

: What a surprise!

And: great!

Here an independent poet is awarded the most important literary prize.

I'm also happy for the poetry.

SPIEGEL:

German readers hardly know Louise Glück.

What is special about your work?

Draesner

: Two things have always been of particular interest to me about

your

work.

On the one hand, her

natural writing

long before the expression existed and became fashionable.

The first thing I did was translate "Wilde Iris", a volume about flowers in which she gives a voice to a wide variety of species, and also invents some.

She describes these flowers in their appearance, but also in their essence, in the way they grow.

She succeeds in doing this in a way that makes connections to the human world recognizable.

She takes something that has been ascribed to female poetry.

And transforms it into a completely independent poetry with the question of how it is to grow and expand.

This is a lyric that has intellectual and intellectual depth, it has nothing sweet about it.

Louise Glück undertakes explorations in her poems; it is a real exploration with language.
