(ANSA) - ROME, OCTOBER 11 - The Lebanese Ministry of the Interior has ordered a week-long lockdown for 169 villages and localities in the country and has ordered the closure of bars and night-time rooms throughout the country to try to cope with the growing spread of coronavirus.

According to international media, the lockdown will begin tomorrow morning and will last at least until 19 October, while the bars and night clubs will remain closed until further notice.

The measures announced today come a week after the ministry's order to lock down 111 villages and localities until tomorrow, about 80 of which are included in the new provisions.

Yesterday, according to the Ministry of Health, Lebanon recorded 1,388 new cases of coronavirus, bringing the total number of infections to 52,558.

Deaths have risen to 455.

Infections in the country have been on the rise since the beginning of July, when the government eased the national lockdown and opened Beirut International Airport.

The new cases have experienced a surge in the days following the devastating explosion of 4 August in the port of the capital which has caused over 200 deaths, about 6,500 injured and left around 300,000 people homeless.
