Podcast SPIEGEL Live - What excites Alice Schwarzer about Heidi and Marilyn Monroe

2020-10-16T15:28:11.331Z

Alice Schwarzer writes about her idols in her book "Lebenswerk". Hear why Heidi shaped her as a child and how the feminist deals with insults like "man-hating Emanze".

Germany's most famous feminist is a guest in the last podcast episode for the bestseller book week.

In parallel to the Frankfurt Book Fair, we dedicated five days to special authors of this extraordinary literary autumn.

Because the book fair is largely digital, the SPIEGEL culture editorial team invited exciting writers to the podcast studio for you.

Alice Schwarzer published the second part of her autobiography at the age of 77.

In it, she describes how strongly her very personal role models have influenced her.

Her first leading figure was Heidi, who fascinated her as a child because she was different from other girls.

"Heidi is not Heidi. 'Heidi' is gender neutral. It takes a lot of liberties that boys usually take. It goes into the mountains and is also smarter than dear Peter, who is also harassed a bit by Heidi ", said Schwarzer in an interview with SPIEGEL editor Eva Thöne.

In their teenage years, James Dean and Marilyn Monroe came along as idols.

But it wasn't until Alice Schwarzer went to Paris that she had the opportunity to meet one of her role models.

At the time she was working as a young correspondent in France and had arranged an interview with Jean-Paul Sartre.

He invited her to his apartment and there she met Simone de Beauvoir for the first time, whose books she had devoured.

At first the writer reacted coldly to the presence of the young, blonde Germans in mini dresses.

The open relationship between the two philosophers seemed to have its limits for Schwarzer.

In the podcast, she explains why Simone de Beauvoir later became her friend.

SPIEGEL editor Eva Thöne also wants to know what she thinks of today's feminism and why she looks down with contempt on young influencers.
