In France, the shock after a brutal Islamist terror attack on a teacher is deep.

According to initial findings, a man in the Paris suburb of Conflans-Sainte-Honorine was attacked and beheaded with a long stabbing weapon on Friday afternoon.

The perpetrator was killed by the police.

French President Emmanuel Macron rushed to the scene a few hours after the attack and found clear words: "Our fellow citizen was attacked cowardly, he was the victim of a vicious Islamist terrorist attack."

Macron, visibly battered, did not give any details in his short speech about the course of the crime, the perpetrator or possible accomplices.

After the crime, which took place near an educational establishment in Conflans-Saint-Honorine, the French anti-terrorist prosecutor was brought in.

Among other things, she is investigating murder with a terrorist background.

According to the media, searches ran in the evening and at night - there were also several arrests.

"You won't get away with it," Macron said, referring to violence and terrorists.

The victim is a teacher at a college, a type of school between a German elementary school and a grammar school.

The man is said to have been in his forties and shown caricatures of the Prophet Mohammed in class on the subject of freedom of expression.

This is said to have caused anger and threats at school.

On October 5th, complaints were received by the school administration.

The alleged perpetrator was picked up by the Anti Criminell Brigade (BAC) shortly after the attack in nearby Éragny-sur-Oise.

According to the police, he tried to attack the officers and was shot dead.

To be on the safe side, an anti-explosives squad also moved in, but found no explosive materials.

According to unconfirmed reports, the perpetrator is said to be 18 years old and born in Moscow.

He was previously unknown to the secret services.

In his brief address, Macron emphasized that education is a great good.

It is no coincidence that a terrorist murdered a teacher of all people because he wanted to attack the country's values.

The teacher was murdered for standing up for freedom of expression.

"Tonight I want to say to all the teachers of France that we are with them, that the whole nation will be by their side, today and tomorrow, to protect and defend them and give them the opportunity to do their most beautiful job, that exist: to make free citizens, "he said.

He also mentioned that the headmistress of the school had been under great pressure in recent weeks - but did not go into the background.

Numerous other politicians reacted in shock to the incident.

"This attack is not just one attack too many. It is barbaric and very serious," said David Le Bars, general secretary of a police union on Franceinfo.

"We are back in this cycle of violence. And people are aware of it."

Only a few weeks ago there was a knife attack in front of the former editorial building of the satirical magazine "Charlie Hebdo" in Paris.

Two people were injured - here too, the investigators assume a terrorist background.

At the same time, the trial of alleged helpers of the terror series in January 2015, in which a total of 17 people were killed, has been running in Paris since the beginning of September.
