Potatoes are an important part of our diet - they are particularly popular as fried fries.
And they are obviously healthier than expected.
Potatoes
are an important part of the
diet
in Germany
.
But many nutrients and vitamins are lost
during
cooking
.
Healthy
or unhealthy?
French fries have an advantage over potatoes.
Offenbach - boiled, fried, casserole or deep-fried -
potatoes
are an
integral part
of our
diet
.
When
cooking
, they are used in many different recipes.
Around 55 kilograms are consumed per capita in Germany in a year.
Potatoes are considered
healthy
because they have a lot of nutrients.
French fries, on the other hand, have a bad reputation.
It is said that they are too unhealthy.
But there is one point where they are even superior to boiled potatoes.
Potatoes contain a relatively high amount of
vitamin C
.
At around 17 milligrams per 100 grams, a
potato
contains
even more vitamin C than an
apple
, which contains around 12 milligrams.
However, when preparing potatoes, some of the vitamins are lost.
Especially when potatoes are peeled and then boiled.
About 16 percent of the vitamin C is lost
when
cooking

Healthy cooking: French fries have an advantage over boiled potatoes
French fries
, on the other hand, are considered less
healthy
than potatoes.
They're fried in fat, so they have around 291 calories per 100 grams instead of around 70 calories.
But French fries have a decisive advantage over the boiled potato: Less vitamin C is lost when frying than when
cooking
.
Potato (raw) | Nutritional values for 100 grams |
Calories | 70 kcal |
protein | 2 g |
carbohydrates | 14.8 g |
fat | 0.1 g |
Fiber | 2.1 g |
vitamin C | 17 mg |
The sudden heat when
frying
stops the enzymes involved in the
cooking
of the
potatoes
, the
vitamin C
would degrade.
In terms of the vitamin C content, french fries are
healthier
than potatoes.
The knowledge magazine "Galileo" checked how many fries you have to eat to meet your daily vitamin C requirement.
Healthy cooking: cover your daily vitamin C requirement with potatoes
The result: It is possible
to cover
the daily requirement of
vitamin C
with
french fries
.
It's even easier than consuming boiled
potatoes
.
Because
more vitamins are lost
when
cooking
.
100 grams of French fries still contain up to 17 grams of vitamin C. The recommended daily vitamin C requirement is 110 mg / day for men and 95 mg / day for women.
Vitamin C is important for
staying
healthy
because it helps the immune system.
To cover the daily requirement, you would have to
eat
around 600 grams of
french fries
- and thus 1650 kilocalories.
For many people, this would cover the daily calorie requirement.
It is therefore not
healthy to
only consume vitamin C in this way.
Still, frozen fries have another advantage over
cooking
potatoes.
French fries + chicken nuggets - according to a study, this is what #children's menu #restaurant often looks like, high in calories + unhealthy.
We want to change that.
Yesterday I took part in the national competition "Awarded!" With @DEHOGA_BV.
Germany's best children's menu ”was launched.

There is another important factor that has a positive effect on the vitamin C content of French fries, making them
healthier
than you might think.
New potatoes often contain fewer vitamins and nutrients than
potatoes,
which are not harvested at the beginning of the year, but in autumn.
And it is precisely these that are used for frozen fries.
If you want to get vitamin C from potatoes, you can do this better with frozen fries than with
cooking
potato dishes.
