These "friendly excitements": Martin Walser does not let Covid-19 spoil memories of previous book fairs. The pandemic could no longer be explained to a young person in a few years.

In any case, the book fairs have always been a friendly excitement for me.

Corona cannot destroy the fact that we, i.e. all those involved, maintain this unique memory.

Nowhere as an author could you get as close to the readers as at a book fair.

It was a dip in a sea of friendliness and interest.

The Corona disruption is of no importance.

I can still see the innumerable number of curious faces in front of me.

This is now temporarily on leave.

It is not more.

Soon, very soon, the corona spasm will be over.

Goodbye forever.

I would like to make a bet that in five years it will hardly be possible to explain Corona to a young person.

I close with a verse from my new book "Sprachlaub", which is due to appear next year.

"Must go without having achieved anything,

arranged a fragment,

not different from others,

but different."
