From the beginning of the corona plague until now, several tens of thousands (!) Of unique studies concerning COVID-19 have been published.

But relatively few have addressed the question of whether pregnant women can infect their babies.

Researchers from Columbia University in the US examined cases of 101 babies born to mothers with COVID-19 in two hospitals in New York City (Columbia Irving Medical Center and Morgan Stanley Children's Hospital in New York) between March 13 and April 24, 2020. They published The results of a study in the Journal of Pediatrics JAMA.

According to the study, it is unlikely that a woman who has been found to be positive for COVID-19 will pass the infection on to her newborn.

Although two of the infants studied were infected with the virus, the researchers could not confirm whether the infection occurred before or after birth.

In any case all 101 infants remained healthy during a two-week follow-up period.

"During the epidemic, we continued to do what we normally do to promote contact and development in healthy infants, taking additional precautions to minimize the risk of exposure to the virus," explained the study's editor, Dr. Cynthia Giampi-Banner, an obstetrician and gynecologist at Columbia University. The

same "additional precautions" were known. Direct contact as well as breastfeeding was allowed, but it was necessary to wear a mask, along with washing hands and breasts before contact. Social distance measures were also put in place: infants left in their mothers' rooms rested in cribs a meter and a half away from the parent.

The study questioned previous guidelines that warned against parent-child contact.

Danny Domitrio, a doctoral student in pediatrics at Columbia Medical School, and another editor of the study feared this cautious approach.

"These recommendations were voiced in the absence of data on SARS-CoV-2 maternal transmission rates and are based on experience in neonatal transmission of other infectious diseases," a press release stated. "Some of the recommendations conflict with what we know about the developmental benefits of preterm breastfeeding and contact." "Skin to skin. Our research shows that these measures may not be necessary for healthy babies with positive mothers in Corona."

He said that although COVID-19 is a highly contagious disease, recent studies suggest that the risk of passing it on to her newborn is minimal.

The same safety measures used in daily life should be sufficient to reduce the risk of infection.
