(ANSA) - NEW YORK, 19 OCT - A rare masterpiece by Giorgio deChirico will be the centerpiece of the sale of modern art and impressionism at Sotheby's in New York scheduled for 28 October.
This is 'Ariadne's Afternoon' of 1913, estimated at between 10 and 15 million dollars.
The work is one of the eight canvases that are part of the series of deChirico's first paintings as well as representing the genesis of the metaphysical style of the Italian painter.
Of these eight canvases, dated between 1912 and 1913, five are in museums such as the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York and the Philadelphia Museum of Art, while only three, including Arianna's Afternoon, are part of private collections.
The work is distinguished from the other canvases by its large-scale vertical format and because it is the only example that describes the emblematic ship from the myth of Ariadne with which Theseus is far away from the island of Naxos.
