President Sergio Mattarella signed the constitutional law which provides for the reduction of parliamentarians and which modifies articles 56, 57 and 59 of the Constitution.

It was learned at the Quirinale.

The text, which was the subject of the referendum question that has just been voted on, received the definitive go-ahead from Montecitorio on 8 October 2019 and provides for the 36.5% cut of the members of both branches of Parliament: from 630 to 400 seats in the Chamber, from 315 to 200 elected seats in the Senate.

The constitutional revision law was approved in double reading by both chambers with an absolute majority, in accordance with the provisions of ex article 138 paragraph 1 of the Constitution. However, given that in the second resolution, in the Senate (11 July 2019), the text was not approved by a qualified majority of two thirds of the members, one fifth of the senators (the actual number was 71) was able to request a confirmatory referendum, as established by article 138, paragraph 2, of the Constitution, by filing a request with the Supreme Court on 10 January.
