The trigger of a fatal accident in a suspected car race on the A66 was probably the change of lane of another car.

One of the sports car drivers who are said to have participated in the race near Hofheim had to evade at high speed and lost control, said a spokeswoman for the Frankfurt public prosecutor's office.

That was the result of the evaluation of a video.

The uninvolved car had swerved left from the central lane to overtake.

After his evasive maneuver, the sports car driver is likely to have crashed into the central guardrail and finally into another car.

The driver of this car died.

Already at the weekend, the prosecutor announced in view of the new findings that the murder allegation against the drivers of the three sports cars had been dropped.

Before the evasive maneuver, the sports car driver is said to have been traveling at 200 km / h.

Both cars caught fire immediately after the collision.

The investigation continues, according to the prosecutor.

The accusation of participating in a prohibited vehicle race is still in the room.

Further investigations would have to clarify whether the further criminal offense could be negligent homicide.

Two of the men involved, aged 29 and 26, were released after a week in custody, according to prosecutors.

A public manhunt is still being sought for a 34-year-old.
