At least twelve people were injured in a collision between two trams in Rostock.
The accident occurred in the morning near a tram depot on Landesstraße 22 at the level of the art gallery, said a police spokeswoman.
According to initial investigations, there are said to be three seriously injured and nine slightly injured.
A line tram occupied with passengers had run into another railcar, it said.
The workshop train in front had carried out brake tests, said the spokeswoman for Rostocker Straßenbahn AG, Katharina Borck.
The broadcasting station Ostseewelle had previously reported on it.
The top of the line tram was severely deformed by the force of the impact.
The driver was seriously injured and could only be recovered a long time after the accident.
But he was approachable, it was said.
Railways are to be recovered in the afternoon
A helicopter with rescue workers was also in action.
Further details such as the exact cause of the accident, the amount of damage and the total number of passengers were initially not known.
"Some of the people got out and left," said the police.
She asked all passengers to report immediately.
Injuries sometimes only emerged later and health deteriorated.
The scene of the accident is on Rostock's main road and has been cordoned off over a large area - there are long traffic jams.
According to the dpa news agency, the damaged trams should be recovered in the afternoon.
