SPIEGEL:

How is the corona crisis changing crime in Germany?

Anja Stiller:

That depends on the offense.

In the case of domestic violence, for example, there is a higher risk that it will occur more frequently.

This is shown by the first results from empirical studies.

Anja Stiller

has been a research assistant at the Criminological Research Institute of Lower Saxony (KfN) since 2015.

The trained psychologist researches mainly on partner violence and violence against children.

SPIEGEL:

What kind of studies are these?

Stiller:

For example, a study looked at six cities in North America and compared the ads in March and April of this year with the previous year.

In all cities, people reported more cases of domestic violence.

Another American study looked at people who went to hospitals because of intimate partner violence.

The research team found that from March to May in 2020, fewer people came to hospitals because of partner violence than in the same period in the previous three years.

However, those affected had much, much more serious injuries than in previous years.

In Germany the developments could be similar.

SPIEGEL: So

far, there is no evidence of

that

in Germany.

Why not?
