The years go by and the performance of high school students in mathematics not only does not improve, they
are getting a little worse
.
It is seen in the results of the last Learn operation of 2019, which was taken in October of last year and the national government presented today, although they were there since March.
There it is observed that
only 28.6% of the students
who are in the last year of high school achieved satisfactory or advanced performance in Mathematics.
The "photo" shows the situation from a year ago and
before the coronavirus pandemic
.
Seen in another way: 71.4% left for university or the world of work, barely managing to recognize some basic concepts of the discipline and
solving very simple calculations

The 2019 edition of Aprender measured how much young people who finish high school learned in
Mathematics and Language
.
It also investigated (with a sample study) learning in Natural Sciences and Citizen Education.
Despite efforts to improve the teaching of Mathematics (for example, with the "National Plan to Learn Mathematics" of the previous government), results in this discipline
continue to deteriorate
.
From 2013 onwards, and in successive measurements
, the percentage of students who are at the “basic” and “below basic” levels is increasing.
The evolution in Language does not show significant differences with previous years, and even some improvements.

The current government, unlike the previous one, preferred to present the results of the Aprender test together with other data on
the conditions in which education takes place in Argentina.
“We understand that the axis is not in the evaluation of the students' learning but in the evaluation of the exercise of the right to education that they have.
And that is a burden to the State.
Although it translates into how children learn, it is the State that creates the conditions for them to learn and that reproduces inequalities, ”justified the Minister of National Education Nicolás Trotta, in dialogue with
Clarín
.
The minister said that, as with the pandemic, all social indicators worsened, they estimate that
this also impacts learning
.
And he announced that they are working on
schemes for the modification of the secondary school
that will start in 2021, as well as on
a new learning assessment
-for primary and secondary- that will be taken next year.

Trotta also showed differences regarding the use that will be given to the data from the Learn operation.
From the marcrismo they always said that the most important thing was to bring a personalized report to the directors of each school, so that they take it as an input for improvement.
“We do not conceive that a school that is underfunded, with increasing social vulnerability, could have the capacity to
respond individually
.
Schools must be accompanied by an educational policy to reverse the situation, ”said Trotta.
The minister recognized that there is an important problem with the learning of Mathematics and said that they will face it from the National Institute of Technological Education (INET), based on
the National Plan of Sciences
, which includes the teaching of all scientific disciplines, and among them Mathematics.
This is where the plan to change the way discipline is taught started two years ago will be located.
He also marked as an official concern a data that arises from the "Report of the Evaluation of secondary education in Argentina 2019" presented today and that is that
only 29% of students finish secondary school on time
, that is, 5 or 6 years later started, without having repeated or abandoned on the way.
“You have to rethink this and give it an answer.
We are going to invest
4,000 million pesos
in a plan to follow the trajectories of the students, ”said Trotta.
There is more interesting data emerging from the report.
For example, the
low use of computers in schools
.
“The least used are the digital cart and tablets (90% of students never use them);
While computers and notebook / netbooks have a somewhat greater presence (32% and 36% use them sometimes, respectively), although around half do not use them to work in class (54% and 48%, respectively).
The trend is different with the cell phone: more than 90% use it in their classes, but 45% indicate that their teachers do not allow its use in the classroom ”, says the report.
The
poor infrastructure conditions of
Argentine secondary
schools also stand out
.
“43% do not have a network drainage or sewer (51% state, 27% private, 85% rural and 29% urban) and 16% do not have water from the public network (19% state, 10% private, 36% rural and 10% urban).
22% of the schools do not have asphalt access either (29% state, 10% private, 58% rural and 11% urban) ”, it is stated.
