In some areas, coronavirus infections are skyrocketing, other places are spared.

This is not only due to the population.

  • The number of infections is increasing and we are currently talking about the second corona wave, which could bring us lock-downs again.

  • The theory of largely corona-free rural areas can often be heard.

But is it really true that you are safer in the village?

  • Regions with few Covid-19 cases have an explanation for the low number of cases.

New Zealand is largely a corona-free zone.

The USA, on the other hand, is still the sad leader in new coronavirus infections: over 8,250,000 Covid-19 cases have been reported since the outbreak of the pandemic.

Why exactly it hits some countries and regions much more violently than others is a topic of dispute and discussion.

Many different factors influence the incidence of infection, including the

hygiene measures that a country imposes, the behavior of citizens with regard to travel and the average age of the population.

It is noticeable in many countries that large cities in particular are among the corona hotspots - also in Germany.

But it has not been proven that one can feel safer in rural regions.

However, there are voices that suggest this.

District Administrator Erwin Schneider explains the low number of cases in the Altötting district in Upper Bavaria with the population density: "

We are a rural region, the people are still scattered

".

As Zeit.de reports, it is indeed regions with low population density that the coronavirus * at first glance seems to avoid.

"Getting out of your way is comparatively easier here than in the metropolises," Zeit.de quotes a district spokeswoman from Lüchow-Dannenberg in Lower Saxony, which with around 40 residents per square kilometer also only has a few Covid 19 cases.

But there are also countless places that are corona hotspots despite the small number of inhabitants.

Spread of Corona: "Short-time workers hardly travel and do not get infected at work"

In many cases it cannot be clearly proven which factors have a significant influence, but there are explanations from regions that are among the less corona-torn areas.

Lüchow-Dannenberg attributes the low values to mobility behavior, among other things.

On the part of the district it says, for example, that the bus only runs on request or for schoolchildren and that most of them use their private car or bicycle.

In Eisenach, however, the buses are full: "The city is still lively in the evenings, it is full of tourists," said Mayor Katja Wolf.

And yet the city has few new corona infections.

Wolf attributes the low infection rate to the Eisenacher's income situation, as Zeit.de reports.

Half of the employees in Eisenach do short-time work: "

Short-time workers hardly travel and do not get infected at work,

" says Wolf.

But everyone also influences the spread of Covid-19: Anyone who gives everything at parties and disregards the distance rules, risks a coronavirus infection.
