The corona is not going anywhere, yet, but it may never really get out of our lives and become a permanent, seasonal disease, similar to the flu.

To this scenario Patrick Valance, the UK's most senior scientific adviser, believes the world needs to be prepared.

Although a number of vaccines against Covid-19 are in advanced stages of development, Valance believes they will not completely eradicate the virus.

"The idea that the corona can be eradicated from anywhere is wrong, it will always come back," Valance said, noting that throughout history there has been only one disease that has really been completely eradicated, thanks to a particularly effective vaccine - smallpox.

"It is impossible to know for sure at the moment, but I think it is very unlikely that we will have a sterile vaccine - something that will completely stop the corona. It is more likely that this virus will continue to circulate in different parts of the world and in different seasons." This is my assessment, "said Valence. And confidence earlier this week.

"As the epidemic's management improves, and we have vaccines that reduce the chances and rates of infection and morbidity ... it will start to look like seasonal flu and like any other disease. It could be the direction we are headed," he said.

Data released earlier this week suggested that the global epidemic had reached two dismal milestones recently - 40 million verified corona cases worldwide and 1.1 million deaths as a result of the epidemic (according to data collected and published by Johns Hopkins University).

According to Valance, historically, developing a new vaccine from scratch takes 10 years on average, and has never been able to do so in less than five years.

"We are in an exceptional situation now, where there are at least 8 experimental vaccines around the world that are undergoing extensive clinical trials ... In the coming months we will find out if there are any effective vaccines that can really protect against the virus and for how long this protection lasts."

An effective vaccine?

Not before spring

He added that some of these vaccines have been known to elicit an immune response in the body and cause antibody production, but only the third and final clinical trial phase (which most leading vaccines are in progress these days) will prove whether they "really prevent people from being infected."

The safety profile of these vaccines will also become clear in the near future, and only from this stage onwards will it be possible to formulate, according to Valance, a "considered and responsible vaccination strategy."

And in conclusion he said that he does not believe that a vaccine will be available to the whole population before spring, at the earliest.
