"That I like social life is not a crime, that you rape me yes", the response of hundreds of women to a group rape in Peru

The lawyer for one of the defendants for raping a young woman in Surco used this statement to discredit the victim. Hundreds of messages on social networks disapproved of the macho comment.

The multiple rape of a 21-year-old woman in the district of Surco, in Lima (Peru) has shocked Peruvian society and public opinion.

The prosecution requests for the five detainees nine months of preventive detention while the case is investigated.

The young woman was raped last Sunday during a party by several of her friends.

During the early hours of Wednesday and Thursday morning, the

hashtag

#MeGustaLaVidaSocial was positioned on social networks in response to the statements of the lawyer Paúl Muñoz, defender of one of the detainees, who assured that the victim "liked social life" as If having a social life were a justification for being raped multiple times.

"It doesn't matter how you were dressed, if it was early morning. If you didn't know anyone. If your friends had already left. If you drank until you passed out. If you lost control. A rape is a rape," wrote one user.

"We must put a stop to statements such as 'he liked social life' and another that aggressors and their defenses repeatedly use to blame survivors of sexual violence, deprive them of their rights with impunity and promote a culture of hatred and discrimination. It is time to make these sexist practices visible in order to eradicate them, "said the Flora Tristán Pro Human Rights Association, through a statement condemning the lawyer's statements.

Hundreds of women and men joined the victim's support and criticized these statements that validate the culture of rape and revictimize women.

The hashtags #VivasYLibresNosQueremos and # PerúPaísDeVioladores were also positioned on networks, since in less than a month there have been four cases of group rapes in Peru.

In 2018, the independent media Ojo Público published a special called 'Peru: the country of 3,000 rape girls', in which it highlighted the failures of the justice system to combat the crime of rape of girls and young women.

To me #megustalavidasocial I have a few drinks, I don't smoke, I talk a lot, I laugh a lot and I dance together ... And that's not a crime.

Rape me, yeah

Respect between men and women is taught at home and reinforced every day, with each person who enters our lives.

#megustalavidasocial and that does not mean that you have the right to harm me.

I love to go out, dance and have fun!

Enough of abuse.

Enough of blaming the victim.

Enough of justifying some VIOLATORS.

Those comments make me want to vomit.

So I am alone with 100 men at my side, no one has the right to touch me.

NOBODY! # Megustalavidasocial # PeruPaisDeVioladores https://t.co/mrC8AfkkgO

With much affection for the beast who calls himself a lawyer.

In Peru it is not only scary that they will rape you that they will touch you that they will kill you but that when it happens and you want to report it, do not believe it and they blame you for how you dressed, what you did or where you were #megustalavidasocial

My daughter is 5 years old and she is a funny, restless, cheerful and playful girl.

I want him to like the social life when he grows up, to have friends, go out to have fun and be happy.

That being a woman does not mean that you will always be in danger.
