(ANSA) - ROME, OCTOBER 25 - "I think we will know if a vaccine is safe and effective by the end of November or early December", said immunologist Anthony Fauci, the most well-known and authoritative face of the White House task force against ilcovid-19.

However, he added, "the question is: once we have a safe and effective vaccine, or more than one, how to get it to the people who need it as soon as possible".

"The quantity of doses that will be available in December - said Fauci in an interview with BBC News - will certainly not be sufficient to vaccinate everyone. We will have to wait for several months of 2021. What will happen is that there will be priorities, for which individuals who work in health care will have it first, as well as people who are in the categories most at risk of complications ".

This process, the immunologist continued, "could begin by the end of this year, the beginning of next, January, February, March. But when it comes to vaccinating a substantial part of the population, in order to have a significant impact on the dynamics of the spread (of the virus), this will probably not happen before the second or third quarter of the year ".
