After a long and serious illness, the US musician Jerry Jeff Walker, who was best known for the song "Mr. Bojangles", died.

"He fought larynx cancer and a few other health problems for many years," said his spokesman. Walker was 78 years old.

Born in 1942 in the US state of New York as Ronald Clyde Crosby, the musician had moved around the country as a street musician after school and finally ended up in Texas.

Walker recorded an album called "Viva Terlingua" live in Texas in 1973, which became a classic on the country rock scene.

In total, he released more than 30 albums.

The musician recorded "Mr. Bojangles", a song about an old street dancer, whom Walker had met in a sobering cell according to the "New York Times", for the first time in 1968.

The song was then sung by numerous other artists such as Sammy Davis Jr. and Bob Dylan.

Walker was diagnosed with larynx cancer in 2017.

The musician underwent chemotherapy and radiation.

He always took it for granted to sing, he told the "Austin American Statesman" 2018. "Now I don't do it anymore."

Walker was married and had two children.
