Coronavirus: Catalonia is considering confining the population on weekends

The idea of ​​confining populations to homes during the weekend is starting to gain traction.

After Israel or Wales, the region of Catalonia in northeastern Spain is considering this possibility to fight the spread of the virus.

"It is a scenario that is on the table, since it is during the weekend that there are the most social interactions," regional government spokeswoman Meritxell Budo explained on the radio. Catalan public.

The goal is "to avoid total containment like in March, unless it becomes absolutely necessary and this is the only option."

Contamination has skyrocketed recently in the region, as in the rest of Spain, the first European country to exceed one million cases of Covid-19 last week.

This decision would come in addition to the measures taken by the Spanish government of Pedro Sanchez who declared Sunday a state of health emergency and imposed a night curfew throughout the country with the exception of the Canary Islands where the health situation is better.
