The Frankfurt am Main public prosecutor is investigating eleven people for coercion.

The suspects are said to have roped off bridges over several Hessian autobahns to protest against the expansion of the A49.

A spokeswoman for the prosecution said they had roped down from a height of four meters and thereby "intentionally caused full closures in rush hour traffic."

An arrest warrant had been applied for because it was feared that the suspects might flee.

The people had previously thwarted the establishment of their identity.

Bridges over the motorways 3, 5 and 661 were affected. The activists protested against the clearing in the Herrenwald and Dannenröder Forest.

There, 27 hectares of forest are to give way to enable the further construction of the A49.

It should one day connect Kassel and Giessen.

According to their own statements, the police had temporarily taken 30 activists into custody.

Among them were twelve people who had rappelled down on the three bridges and 18 others who supported the actions.

Initially, it was said that 19 of these people would have to answer for dangerous interference in road traffic and coercion.

Entrenched in tree houses

In both forests, environmental and climate protectors had holed up in tree houses and on platforms to stop the felling work.

You think the project is a failure, as it stands in the way of the traffic turnaround.

Proponents, on the other hand, hope that the A49 gap closure will result in less traffic and noise as well as a lower risk of accidents in the villages of the region, shorter distances for commuters and better connections to the road network.

Construction is scheduled to start in September 2021

The protests have been going on for more than a year.

According to the Vogelsberg district, the actual construction of the motorway should begin on September 1, 2021.

In preparation, clearing is to take place by February 2021.

In mid-October, a similar blockade on the A3 in the backwater near Idstein had an accident in which one person was seriously injured.

A car had run into a truck at the end of the traffic jam.
