Recall of basmati rice: "Aflatoxin border crossing"

The reason for the recall is "Exceeding the limit value of aflatoxins", better known as mold poison, as can be read on the federal portal food warning.de.

Affected is

"Basmati rice, real Basmati rice, brown"

 in a

500 g bag

 with the

shelf life: "15.11.2021"

 and the three

lot numbers 901584, 901665

and

 901722

.

It is unclear how the border crossing came about.

What is certain, however, is that consumption of the product is not recommended in any case.

The

Federal Office for Risk Assessment

describes

aflatoxins

as "metabolic products that are formed by various molds such as

Aspergillus flavus

and

Aspergillus parasiticus

 ."

These

molds

would “especially attack dried fruits, pistachios, nuts, peanuts and corn kernels, for example in the field or during storage, and form aflatoxins.” Animal feed can also be attacked by the mold and consequently contain aflatoxins.

Recall of basmati rice: warning of aflatoxins "are among the strongest poisons occurring in nature"

The danger posed by

aflatoxins

should not be underestimated because they “are among the strongest poisons occurring in nature.” When asked about the specific health risk, the BfR writes: “They have a high carcinogenic potential.

Orally ingested in higher concentrations, they can primarily damage the kidneys, liver and unborn life.

In addition, aflatoxins can damage the genetic material, which means that they have a genotoxic effect. "

Recall of Basmati rice from the Grell company: five federal states particularly affected

The spread of the

mold toxin

in

Germany

is rather unusual.

The supervisory authorities of the federal states would determine that the maximum levels for aflatoxins in foodstuffs set by the European Commission were exceeded "in individual cases".

If you

have bought

the aforementioned

basmati rice

in the

meantime

, you can return the product to the store.

You will then usually receive a refund of the purchase price.

The warning currently applies in particular to the states of

Berlin

,

Brandenburg

,

Bremen

,

Hamburg

and

Schleswig-Holstein

.

However, the

Grell

company

also has online sales, so it can be assumed that it will be affected nationwide.
