Banks, Venesio: extend government measures until June 2021

"The firepower of the Italian banking world is very large, there is a lot of liquidity in the banks which can therefore continue to finance the economy in the coming months, it will depend on the will of the government to continue and extend the guarantees". (HANDLE)

Given the persistence of the pandemic crisis, for the vice-president of ABI Camillo Venesio it would be appropriate to review, or at least suspend, the European system of rules on banks and impaired loans, conceived and launched before this exceptional situation "First of all, the EBA, the European banking authority, - he explains in an interview with ANSA - should resume the pandemic approach that ceased to have on 30 September last, i.e. the suspension of some rules and some institutions that create and would create more and more problems in financing of our customers ".

Then there is fintech, which is experiencing a strong increase but the ECB has said it does not want the uncontrolled development of digital in the financial sector.

For Venesio, managing this change is difficult but possible: "It is necessary for regulators and controllers to find the right compromise, of course the thing not to do is to maintain only very strong regulations on traditional commercial banks".

"The firepower of the Italian banking world - he argued - is very large, there is a lot of liquidity in the banks which can therefore continue to finance the economy in the coming months, it will depend on the government's will to continue and extend the guarantees".

The loans requested by the banks from the Guarantee Fund now travel around 100 billion euros.

"As we know today, an extension of the extraordinary measures until June 30 next year, thus still covering the entire first half of 2021, would be really useful and appropriate - says Venesio -. The important thing, especially for initiatives such as moratoriums. , is that there is a link between national and European standards, otherwise there is the risk that the extension will count for little ".
