The debate about raising the retirement age continues.

But how many employees in Germany can retire at 67?

Should the statutory

retirement age be

increased * or should employees even

retire

earlier

?

It is well known that political opinions differ in this debate.

But how many employees actually benefit from their pension?

Debate about retirement at 67 in Germany

According to a report by the Berliner Morgenpost, figures show that in 2019 one in seven people in Germany died before reaching the

statutory retirement age

.

As the Federal Ministry of the Interior announced in response to a request from the left in the Bundestag, 14.4 percent of all those who died in 2019 were under 65, according to the report on morgenpost.de (as of October 25, 2020).

"That was around 136,000 people."

The ministry is referring to figures from the Federal Statistical Office, the report says.

“If the statutory retirement age were already 67, the

proportion of those who die before retirement

would be as

much as 17.0 percent or one sixth.

In total, around 159,000 people under 67 died in 2019. "

Debate about pension - increasing life expectancy

As also emerged from a further response from the Ministry of the Interior to a request from the social expert of the Left, Sabine Zimmermann,

the average expectation of years without

health restrictions has

fallen

for the future generation despite

increasing life expectancy

, writes the portal.

This is especially true for

girls

.

"If you were born in 2018, you have a life expectancy of 83.4 years, which is two months more than the 2015 born." However, the prospects for the 2015 born are "statistically better to spend more time in good health".

According to the report, if girls were born in 2015, “according to the information, they can statistically assume that they will live without health restrictions up to 67.7”.

In the 2019 vintage, on the other hand, it was only 66.3 years.
