(ANSA) - ROME, OCTOBER 28 - An amendment to the proposed "European Delegation Law" was approved yesterday in the Senate which eliminates subsidies for palm oil and soybean oil for fuel use, the cause of deforestation in the world from 2023.

If the proposal passes to the Chamber, palm and soybean oil and their derivatives will be excluded in Italy from the calculation of renewable energy and from the market subsidies currently envisaged by law, starting from January 1, 2023. press release.

In the new renewable energy directive, the EU requires its end before 2030, but member states can anticipate it.

In France, the exclusion will take place from January 1, 2020, in Norway from 2021. Legambiente asks to end subsidies from January 1, 2021, also through the #unpienodipalle petition which collected 65,000 signatures.

Eni, after being condemned by the Italian Competition Authority in January 2020, has promised to eliminate palm oil from its Enidiesel + biodiesel by 2023.

"2023 - comments Andrea Poggio, Legambiente's mobility manager - seems to be the possible mediation between the interests of oil companies and lobbyists in the fight against deforestation and climate-altering emissions. A mediation that satisfies us only in part, because we will subsidize the burning of palm oil and soybean oil at the expense of citizens ".
