Who is responsible for cleaning and preserving the streams in the country according to the Israelis?

Not them

.

At least that's what a special survey conducted this month at the initiative of the Society for the Protection of Nature shows.

According to the survey, conducted by a geocartography company and included a representative sample of 509 people, about two-thirds (60%) of the public believe that the state, through the Nature and Parks Authority / Ministry of Environmental Protection, should be responsible for streams in the country.

A further 36% believe that the local authority that the creek passes through should be responsible for its cleanliness, and another 5% think that the citizens who live near the creek should clean it.

The survey also found that 77% of us believe that not enough has been done in Israel to rehabilitate streams.

96% answered that if there was a clean, well-kept and tidy river in Israel, in the area of their city - they would visit it.

Half of us do not visit streams at all

Other pretty amazing findings in the survey show that most Israelis do not visit our country's streams.

56.4% of the public do not visit streams at all, or visit them very infrequently.

The main reasons for this are overcrowding, noise and commotion, garbage and dirt in the creek area, lack of accessibility and lack of knowledge about the streams and their location.

Most Israelis (42%) do not visit streams because they are far from home, while 40% of us are disturbed by noise and garbage they see in the field, and rightly so.

And what do you do when you already come to the river?

The survey also found that half of Israelis think that streams are a pleasant place to visit, albeit hesitantly, and if the streams in Israel were more accessible, clean, unpolluted and there was more information about them - more people would visit them.

And what is the main purpose of our visit to the streams?

So most visitors enjoy the water source of the creek (they indicate that they walk inside the creek and bathe in it), while those who visit them frequently, and especially young people, are more likely to bathe in it.

Others (19%) like to go on a picnic in the creek and camp next to it (7%).

The state is responsible for cleaning the streams.

And what about us?

Garbage dumped in the Jordan River

"Especially in Corona, the public understands how vital the streams are to our health"

According to Dana Tabachnik, director of the river restoration unit at the Society for the Protection of Nature: "Today, especially in light of the Corona epidemic, the public understands how open spaces and streams are important to it and serve as recreational and recreational areas for our existence and health. In a land where there is no river. "

According to her, the streams are a natural water carrier, which are home to a rich variety of wildlife and plants and are of great importance, especially in a dry area, such as in Israel.

"The Society for the Protection of Nature has been working for many years to promote the conservation and restoration of streams in Israel and calls on the public to demand national and local elected officials, preserve the streams, clean them of pollution, allow them to receive their natural water sources and expand their floodplains," she says.

"In return, we will get a healthy, strong stream, with a rich variety of species, that protects us from flooding and allows us more space for recreation and leisure in nature."

Next month (November 14-13) there will be a "Carnival in the River" event - short trips in the streams, in order to introduce the public to slightly lesser known streams and reveal familiar streams, from other and more special angles.

Among the streams where hikes will take place are the cave stream;

Nahal Tzivon;

Eastern Crocodile River;

The emerging Yarkon;

Euphrates River;

Nahal Latem and more.

The tours will be guided by nature conservationists, birders and educators and the community, of the Society for the Protection of Nature, at a symbolic and special price, in honor of the carnival.
