THE QUESTION.

Until further notice, bookstores are not among the businesses deemed "essential" under the new health protocol.

They do not therefore benefit - like newsagents, tobacco or telecom shops - from the right to remain open during this start of the second confinement, whose start date falls badly for booksellers.

Indeed, year-end sales (November and December) do not represent far from half of their annual turnover (44% in 2019 according to GfK Market Intelligence).

The French traditionally buy books en masse for the holidays, and these sales (about half of which fall under the “

general literature

” category

to which novels belong) are notably supported by the literary prizes, the season of which was due to begin this week.

In solidarity with bookstores and to "

keep

" the sales linked to their prices when they are opened again, several juries have announced
