On Friday evening a car broke through barriers in Mecca and drove straight into the door of the Great Mosque at high speed.

A spokesman for the Mecca region said the car was allegedly off the road.

A video shared on social media shows the car breaking two barriers in the square in front of the mosque and then crashing into the door.

The incident took place around 10:25 p.m. local time.

Nobody was injured.

The cause of the incident is unclear.

The driver was in an "abnormal condition" after the arrest, it said.

There were initially no indications of a planned act.

The Great Mosque surrounds the cube-shaped Kaaba, the holiest place for Muslims.

On the pilgrimage to Mecca, it is surrounded by believers from all over the world.

After a break of several months because of the corona pandemic, Saudi Arabia allowed the small pilgrimage to Mecca again at the beginning of October.

The number of pilgrims is limited.
