Izmir, Turkey

"Sister, I'm scared. Can you hold my hand?"

asks 16-year-old Inci Okan.

Helpers were able to save the girl and her dog from the rubble of an eight-story skyscraper in Izmir - 17 hours after the devastating quake that shook the metropolis on the Aegean coast on Friday afternoon.

Inci is one of the lucky few who was able to thank the rescue team in the hospital for their work.

The helpers were able to pull another earthquake victim out of the rubble after 33 hours: this 70-year-old man also survived.

But the work of the helpers is a fight against time and the death toll is rising.

Recep Tayyip Erdogan, President Turkey

"So far there have been 58 deaths. 896 people were injured, 200 of them are in hospital."

According to the Turkish disaster authority, the quake had a strength of 6.6 on the Richter scale.

The US authority responsible for earthquakes even stated the strength of the quake as 7.

The Greek island of Samos near the Turkish coast is also affected.

The Turkish civil protection authority also reported further minor aftershocks on Sunday.

The European Union and NATO offered

and Greece.

Meanwhile, the helpers in Izmir are still looking for survivors in the rubble - but 48 hours after the first quake, hope is slowly fading.
