Man disguised as Macron led through Neukölln on a rope - police investigate criminal offense

2020-11-02T15:11:39.285Z

A man is being led through Sonnenallee on a rope, wearing a Macron mask: The images of this action have caused a sensation. Now the police are checking whether those involved could have committed a criminal offense.

A video caused a stir on social media that shows a man in a white robe leading a man masked as Emmanuel Macron on a rope across Berlin's Sonnenallee.

The state security of the LKA is investigating the case and examining the extent to which the two men and two other people who are said to have been involved in the action have committed a crime, said a spokesman for the Berlin police.

It is also possible that the people could be prosecuted for violating the Corona regulation because they were in a larger group, did not keep their distance and did not wear mouth and nose protection, the spokesman said.

The police had announced via Twitter that they had checked a Youtuber on Alexanderplatz on Saturday evening.

"He is said to have led his acquaintance in a wig & Macron mask on a rope through Neukölln, insulted, and indicated that he was going to hit him," it said.

According to the spokesman, the police assume that they are the same people as in the video.

The background is still unclear.

The "Tagesspiegel" reported on the incident at the weekend.

After the beheading of his teacher Samuel Paty by an Islamist in France, French President Macron defended freedom of expression and the publication of cartoons critical of religion.

At a memorial service, he said that France would not "give up caricatures and drawings, even if others withdraw from them".

The teacher had shown cartoons of Mohammed in class as an example of freedom of expression.

Macron's remarks sparked protests from Muslims around the world.
