Reporter Markus Kowalski:

You have to wear a mask everywhere: in the subway, in shops and even in some shopping streets.

This is not so good for the skin on the face because the skin suffers from it.

On Instagram, many users complain about mask acne under the hashtag "maskne".

Today I want to know how I can prevent pimples on my face and I talked to Dr.

Eric Petzold made an appointment.

Now in the Corona period, quite a few people have to wear masks, is it the case that more people come to the dermatologist's practice here who complain about this mask acne?

Dr.

med.

Eric Petzold:

It really is much more.

I would say that you can see almost twice as much during the day as before.

Even patients who otherwise generally have good skin, i.e. who did not know any problems before, but who have now developed something new and unattractive by wearing a mask.

Reporter Markus Kowalski:

Which masks are better suited and which are perhaps not so suitable for the skin?

Dr.

med.

Eric Petzold:

Basically: My recommendation is to wear a cotton mask.

So something breathable not these plastic-like masks, where you sweat even more underneath.

It is the case that the skin barrier is irritated by the friction at the points on the bridge of the nose, on the cheeks and also on the chin.

Reporter Markus Kowalski:

How often should I change my mask during the day?

Dr.

med.

Eric Petzold:

That depends a bit on how long you've been wearing them.

I recommend changing them two to three times a day.

If you've just been dragged over it while shopping, then it's okay if you go on like this for the day.

Reporter Markus Kowalski:

If I want to take care of my skin, what are good mornings and evenings for taking care of the skin on my face?

Dr.

med.

Eric Petzold:

Basically, you don't have to adapt the routine to the mask.

There are just a few things to keep in mind.

In the morning I always recommend cleansing with clear water, Vtamin C serum, to strengthen the skin and prevent inflammation.

Then you can apply a sun protection factor, even in winter.

You should especially make sure that it is not so rich, i.e. not greasy sunscreen, but rather a light texture.

Reporter Markus Kowalski:

So it's not that difficult if you wash your face in the morning and in the evening, wash your mask every day and find the right face cream, then mask acne shouldn't be a problem.
