Singer Grönemeyer: "Electrifying someone"

SPIEGEL:
Mr. Grönemeyer, how have you been since the outbreak of the pandemic?
Grönemeyer:
At the beginning of the year I did a play with Herbert Fritsch in Bochum, it was called "Herbert" and unfortunately had to be canceled a week before the premiere.
Then I was allowed to conduct in Lucerne, which was postponed in April.
And in December we wanted to go on tour with the orchestra, so we had to cancel that.
In this respect, not much has changed as a result of the current shutdown: the virus closes the door.
For me personally, it's certainly not that complicated.
But many self-employed soloists who are involved - I have 120 people in my live crew alone - don't earn anything from now on.
They feel the same way as the theaters and showmen, friends and acquaintances, the self-employed and medium-sized companies.
SPIEGEL:
Why is the protest from the entire cultural industry only now becoming so audible?
Grönemeyer:
Basically, we artists like to be all lone fighters, with us it is more a sign of weakness when we start calling for the state.
But when you see how many other industries are supported or corporations are absorbed and at the same time many in our area have to start using up their pensions, then of course you start to scream at some point.
