The numbers have been rising for years, and the sad trend is continuing: the BKA recorded almost 140,000 acts of violence in relationships or by ex-partners last year. The victims are mostly women.

The number of reported acts of violence in partnerships or by ex-partners has risen again in Germany.

Federal Family Minister Franziska Giffey (SPD) presented an evaluation by the Federal Criminal Police Office (BKA) for 2019.

Accordingly, there were almost 142,000 cases, about 0.7 percent more than the year before.

The trend of recent years is thus continuing.

However, conclusions about an increase in violent acts can only be drawn to a limited extent because the number of unreported cases is high and more known cases can also mean that more victims go to the police.

According to the statistics, women were affected in 81 percent of the cases.

A good half of the victims were said to be living with the perpetrator in the same household at the time of the crime.

It is "very likely" that the corona pandemic has exacerbated the situation again, said Giffey - but figures for the current year are not yet part of the statistics.

One must assume that the number of unreported cases is significantly higher than the number of cases that the police know about.

The statistics deal with crimes such as murder and manslaughter, assault, rape, sexual assault, threats and stalking or deprivation of liberty.

Violence in the middle of society concerns everyone, said BKA boss Holger Münch.

Since 2015 there has been a continuous trend of increasing numbers.
