Two German films have been nominated for the European Film Prize this year.

The love drama "Undine" by Christian Petzold and the literary film adaptation "Berlin Alexanderplatz" by Burhan Qurbani are candidates for the best film, as the European Film Academy announced on Tuesday.

The actresses Paula Beer ("Undine") and Nina Hoss ("Little Sister") have also been proposed as best actress.

You are competing with four other actresses.

"Berlin Alexanderplatz" also has a chance of winning the script award.

"Undine" relocates the myth of the legendary mermaid who kills faithless men to the Berlin of today.

Paula Beer plays a city historian in it and was awarded a Silver Bear at the last Berlinale in February for her portrayal.

"Berlin Alexanderplatz" is a three-hour long adaptation of Alfred Döblin's literary classic, which also had its world premiere at the Berlinale.

Welket Bungué plays the refugee Francis, who tries in the midst of the Berlin drug milieu to maintain integrity against all odds and temptations.

A total of six productions have been proposed as best film: In addition to the two films by German directors, there are "Druk" ("Another Round") by Thomas Vinterberg, "Corpus Christi" by Jan Komasa, "Nabarvené ptáče" ("The Painted Bird") by Václav Marhoul and "Martin Eden" by Pietro Marcello.

Marcello's adaptation of the classic novel by Jack London has also been nominated for Best Director, Best Screenplay and Best Actor, which means it has received the most awards.

It is due to be released in German cinemas on January 28, 2021.

The European Film Prize is awarded annually alternately in Berlin and in another city.

A gala was planned in Iceland this year - but the event is canceled due to the spread of the corona virus.

Instead, the awards will be announced digitally from December 8th to 12th.
