In the midst of the debate on the increasingly close application of vaccines against the coronavirus, the Buenos Aires Minister of Health, Fernán Quirós, warned that people, like him, who are not considered a risk group, "

should not be vaccinated

."

The official said it when warning that "the interim analysis (of the vaccines)

is sufficiently safe but it does not have long-term follow-up"

, so that, for him, "it does not seem reasonable to give the vaccine to people with lower risk."

And he added: "In that sense, those of us who are not risk groups, like myself,

should not be vaccinated

. Therefore, it is not whether I would apply it or not. It is not appropriate for us to discuss, among those of us who are not at risk, the application of a vaccine that has not yet completed phase 3 at the two-year follow-up. "

He had asked Quirós if he would apply the Russian Sputnik V vaccine, which many questioned because of the little information about its progress.

But the official stressed that, beyond the place where the vaccine is developed, "international standards have been agreed" that everyone must meet.

After insisting on the need to wait for the first "scheduled interim cuts" that those who develop the vaccines will carry out to give details of the progress, Quirós explained that at that time and until phase 3 is completed, it is necessary to explain the benefits and the possible complications to the people who make up the risk groups and

that "they decide."

"We need to discuss and explain to people at risk what information we have at the time of the interim cuts, and with those results, tell them 'this is the benefit and this is the potential risk, and each one of the people in that condition will be able to choose.

Those of us who are not risk groups are not part of this debate, "

Quirós said at a press conference.

Regarding the recent data released by Pfizer, which claimed to be 90% effective, Quirós stressed that "it is encouraging because

the efficiency shown by the first cut is very high

."

The efficacy of protection of this vaccine against the virus was achieved seven days after the second dose and 28 days after the first, the US pharmaceutical company indicated in a joint statement with BioNTech.

The data is more than optimistic since scientists expect an effectiveness of around 75%.
