After Pfizer surprised the world last week with the release of interim data that showed 90 percent efficacy for its vaccine for corona, now the modern company is also publishing encouraging results from its vaccine trial and reporting 94.5 percent efficacy.

The two giant companies are working on a vaccine for corona using the same technology - mRNA, which will be given by two-dose injection, but the differences will actually be reflected in the schedule and the ability to transport their vaccines.

Another important difference for Israeli citizens - Israel has signed an agreement with Modern in advance on bringing millions of vaccines to Israel.

The Phase 3 study of Moderna included 30,000 participants.

The company's provisional outcomes were based on 95 subjects among participants who received a vaccine or placebo.

Of these, only five were infected among those who received the vaccine, which was given in two injections 3 weeks apart (as opposed to Pfizer which was given 28 days apart).

Eleven patients developed a severe disease, all from the placebo group.

How exactly does Pfizer's promising vaccine work?

Experts in Israel and around the world express optimism following the publication of the results of a modern company.

"The interim results that Moderna released today give an initial glimpse into the efficacy and safety of her vaccine," he told Walla!

Health Dr. Erez Gerty, immunologist and head of science communications at the Davidson Institute for Science Education, "The interim results from the two companies' clinical trials suggest not only that their specific vaccines are effective against corona, but that in general mRNA vaccines can work in humans, which has been questionable." Dr. Gertie noted, however, that it is worth waiting for the "truth results" of the clinical research of the two companies, "to make sure that the vaccine is indeed effective, and no less important - safe."

Modern's experimental vaccine is based on a relatively new technology called mRNA that contains the 'genetic instructions' for protein production.

The vaccine contains the genetic information responsible for the spike-like proteins found on the outer surface of the SARS-CoV-2 virus.

Upon administration of the vaccine, the immune system recognizes the foreign protein and begins to produce an antibody response to it.

The body of a vaccinated person who will be exposed to the virus after the vaccine should already be prepared against him so that he can fight it more efficiently and quickly.

Unlike Pfizer, Moderna's trial also included 5,000 people aged 65 and over and about 7,000 younger people with background illnesses.

In terms of side effects, the experiment showed that in about 3 percent of the participants the vaccine caused pain in the injection site.

After the subjects received a second dose of the vaccine, 10 percent of the participants reported that they were tired and experienced flu-like symptoms.

Another advantage of Moderna's vaccine over Pfizer's is that it does not require extreme cold.

Modern expects that it will be able to survive at a temperature of 2 to 8 degrees for 30 days, and in a cold of minus 20 degrees for half a year.

Pfizer's vaccine, on the other hand, needs to be stored at a temperature of minus 80 degrees at all times, which means that in a standard freezer it will only survive up to five days and will be very difficult to transport to countries around the world.

Senior health officials in India also said that "we are more prepared for modern vaccines than those of Pfizer."

When will the vaccine reach us?

It was only in early October that Modern CEO Stefan Bansell announced that the company would not be able to distribute its vaccines widely before the spring of 2021. “November 25th is the time we have enough data on vaccine safety so we can apply for an emergency approval from the FDA ", Said Bensel, adding that no approval is expected by the end of the first quarter or second quarter of 2021.

Now, with the success of the third phase of the trial and the fact that Israel has signed ahead of time with a modern agreement to supply 8 million vaccines, the vaccines here in Israel hope They will indeed be delivered by next April - which makes the modern CEO's forecast correct and accurate.

And most importantly - optimistic.

As mentioned, unlike Pfizer, with which Israel did not have an extensive agreement to purchase vaccines, Modern Israel actually signed a deal earlier that should give it priority over other countries (though, probably not over the US) if and when the vaccine that Moderna develops is proven. As effective and approved for use. The company's CEO at Ansel said this summer that the company has increased its production rate in anticipation of positive results in clinical trials and that it is expected to produce 500 million doses of the vaccine by 2021 - which means Pfizer will have more than a billion vaccines ready next year. .

So perhaps there will be an answer to perhaps the most intriguing question - for how long will these vaccines be effective?
