The President of the German Teachers Association, Heinz-Peter Meidinger, advocates the possibility of an additional year because of the school restrictions caused by the corona crisis.
For many parents and students, this would "take the enormous pressure out of the current situation" and also defuse the problem of printing notes, the news portal "watson" quotes Meidinger.
It is already becoming apparent "that this school year will not be a normal school year either" and that it will not be possible to meet the curricula, said Meidinger.
The gaps in the previous school year would thus become even larger.
Exams should be adapted to the situation
Due to the pandemic, parents' associations and student representatives are concerned about whether fair examination conditions are possible.
An additional school year has not yet been widely debated.
Teachers 'and parents' associations in Bavaria initially demanded that students should not suffer any disadvantages due to the absence of lessons.
"Course content, the number of performance records and the content of the respective final exams must be adapted to the situation in order to focus on the situation," said the associations in a joint paper.
The Federal Schoolchildren's Conference also asked the Ministries of Education to take the current situation into account in upcoming exams.
"Now it is a matter of the pupils concerned taking exams in which, on the one hand, the situation and circumstances of the past few months are taken into account, but which on the other hand are also comparable to those of the last few years," said Dario Schramm, General Secretary of the Federal Schools Conference.

Meidinger had already asked in the spring, during the week-long school closure, that schoolchildren should have the opportunity to repeat a class voluntarily.
Saarland, for example, offered this option.
Other federal states such as Hesse, on the other hand, rely on no student being able to remain seated.
