(ANSA) - TURIN, NOV 19 - There is a controversy in Piedmont between the General Prosecutor's Office and the Criminal Chamber on the issue of risk trials for the Covid emergency.
After the position taken by the prosecutor of Turin, Anna Maria Loreto, the lawyers took the position, according to which "the terms of precautionary custody cannot be extended beyond reasonable", because "ours is a rule of law that protects the presumption of innocence".
"I understand the lawyers' reasons, but also that the particular prevention needs require that, for certain defendants, the possibility that they will be released from prison for the expiry of the terms of the trial phase that is taking place is averted", replies the attorney general of Piedmont, Francesco Saluzzo, according to to which "the State must do everything in its power to guarantee citizens, avoiding the possibility that people accused of crime can be released from prison and regain possession of criminal spaces on the territory".
"The defendants are all presumed innocent, they are not guilty that they must 'only' be convicted", argues instead the president of the Criminal Chamber, lawyer Alberto De Santcis.
