Paris Jackson wore a mask on her face long before it became a must.

This is how it is when nicknames like "King of Pop" are attached to your father, the media is constantly trying to crack his enigmatic and strange personality, and your very birth arouses a lot of public interest.

When Dad Michael Jackson was not busy swinging babies and showcasing them on the fourth floor, he did quite a bit to keep his kids private.

A combination of the personal trauma he experienced as a star child and the fact that he was an eccentric type and not completely mentally balanced, led him to hide his children in a variety of blankets and costumes, as a means of protection from the outside world.

But that did not necessarily help.

Still, being born to Michael Jackson and growing up on the Neverland farm among monkeys and alpacas is not exactly fertile ground for stable maturation.

As expected, Paris, now 22, has known depression, addictions and suicide attempts since her teens.

And that's before we get to her definition of herself as "gay" (her record contains women and men but she does not see herself as bisexual) or the fact that she sees herself as a black person.

Weighing all this data, plus a musical education that included blues, soul, R&B, Motown and hip hop, it's quite surprising that she chose to become a folk artist.

"Wilted", Paris Jackson's debut album, does not sound like a work by a singer born in 1998.

It was preceded by an EP she released with her professional partner and ex-partner Gabriel Glenn, as part of the Soundflowers duo.

On the difficult parting from it, Paris based the contents of her first solo album, which sounds like it was written, textually and musically, in the nineties.

Producingly, it is a quality indie-folk product, the kind that was popular during the previous decade.

In short, "poor trifle" is not.

Instead, we received a sensitive, melancholy, and most of all, very beautiful album by a promising performer.

True to its name (meaning "withered" or "defeated"), Jackson presents a collection of delicate songs in a warm, embracing acoustic cover.

Her voice is soft, caressing and deep, and the production care given to her by Andy Hall, a member of the Manchester Orchestra, produces a collection of songs that are uniform in their style and level.

It can be argued that quite a few passages here are similar to each other and difficult to distinguish between them, and that would also be true.

But on the other hand, stylistic uniformity is a very logical thing in a concept album, with a clear story and theme about great love, betrayal and heartbreak.

This is a sad, wintry and great album.
