Immune to Covid-19: Researchers detect corona immune cells over this long period of time

A short while ago the information circulated that you would not be immune to the viruses for long after a corona infection.

A new study comes to a different conclusion.

  • The hope of many: After the first infection with coronaviruses, the immune system develops antibodies * that make a renewed infection much milder - or even prevent it completely.

  • There are few studies on this, as the first wave of corona disease was not long ago.

Initial evaluations, however, indicated that the body quickly “forgets” a corona infection.

The antibody level in some Covid-19 patients had dropped rapidly in studies.

  • A current study, however, comes to results that are positive.

With regard to the corona pandemic, there are quite a few explosive questions.

This also includes whether immunity develops after an infection with coronaviruses that protects against further infections.

An American research team has looked at the subject -

and in a study they came to a result that gives

rise to

hope.

Shane Crotty from the Californian La Jolla Institute for Immunology and his team analyzed the data of 185 Covid-19 patients who had the disease months ago.

The scientists were able to establish

that immunity can be demonstrated in the form of memory cells even months after the illness has been overcome

.

Different types of immune cells were detectable in the body, including those that recognize spike proteins on the surface of coronaviruses: “Spike IgG was relatively stable for more than six months.

Spike-specific memory B-cells were present more frequently after six months than after 1 month, ”says the US researchers' publication.

With the help of spike proteins, the viruses dock onto receptors on the surface of body cells and penetrate them.

Memory cells in the body “memorize” the structure of the virus surface and prevent the viruses from penetrating the body cells.

More on the topic

: Not an isolated case: Corona patients get infected again - with a genetically modified corona virus.

Covid-19 immune cells still detectable in the body six months after corona infection

According to the researchers, immune cells against Covid-19 can remain in the body for up to six months after infection and thus prevent renewed infection, as Businessinsider.de reported.

Even if corona antibodies were no longer detectable,

important memory

cells would

remain in the body - which can protect against a serious course of the disease

, according to the researchers' thesis.

More large-scale studies must now follow to support the study's findings.
