Thomas Schanz from Piesport on the Moselle in Rhineland-Palatinate has been named “Chef of the Year” by the restaurant guide “Gault & Millau”.

The gastronomy critics praised the 40-year-old at an online gala in the highest tones.

"Far away from the metropolises, the modest, reserved Thomas Schanz has quietly transformed his parents' business into one of the best restaurants in the republic," said a gala held online.

The »Restaurant Schanz« received 19 out of 20 possible points.

The newly named “Chef of the Year 2021” has already received many awards, including two Michelin stars from the “Guide Michelin”.

"Gault & Millau" certified the chef's "meticulous work" and "contemporary, complex style based on classic French product cuisine".

Last year Hubert Wallner from the »See Restaurant Saag« received the award.

The restaurant's current menu includes a “tapis from foie gras with tomato cherry relish” or a “fricassee from Breton lobster”.

Menus start at around 100 euros.

2020 was not an easy year for the catering industry: The shutdown was followed by months with a limited number of guests in restaurants and bars - only to shut down operations again in November.

According to the Crif Bürgel credit agency, every seventh restaurant business was threatened with bankruptcy in October.

By the end of October, more than 8,300 restaurants, pubs, snack bars and cafes in Germany were at risk of bankruptcy, according to an analysis - around 15 percent of the companies examined.
