A 64-year-old German died about a year ago as a result of the devastating volcanic eruption in New Zealand.
The tourist had already died on July 2nd in a "foreign hospital," said the New Zealand police.
The confirmation of his death in a foreign hospital was "as soon as practically possible" after a forensic doctor first determined that his death was due to the injuries sustained in the outbreak, the police said.
Why exactly this took several months is unclear.
This increased the death toll to 22.
When the outbreak occurred on December 9th, 47 tourists were on a sightseeing tour of the volcanic island of White Island off the east coast of New Zealand.
According to the police, the 64-year-old's family has now asked that their privacy be preserved while they say goodbye to "their beloved husband, father and grandfather".
On the first anniversary of the volcanic eruption, only a small memorial event for families and helpers is planned due to the corona pandemic.
There should also be a minute's silence, as the organizers announced.
New Zealand is located on the so-called Pacific Ring of Fire, the geologically most active zone on earth.
White Islands volcano was increasingly active before the accident, but boats with day trippers kept going there.
