Researchers are clarifying more and more questions about Covid-19.

A new study from Austria now claims to have found out what role the blood group plays in coronavirus infections.

  • With regard to the risk of infection with coronaviruses, you can influence many factors yourself.

Face masks *, for example, have a protective effect.

  • According to a new study, there are also risk factors for Covid-19 that cannot be influenced.

  • The blood group should determine whether you are infected with Covid-19

    .

Do you know your blood type?

Blood donors know whether they belong to group A, B, AB or 0.

It is the structure of the red blood cells that determines the blood group - more precisely, it is the proteins - also called antigens - on the surface structure of the red blood cells.

If no antigens are detected on the surface of the red blood cells, doctors speak of blood group 0.

At 41 percent, it is the second most common blood group in Germany

.

People with blood group A carry the antigen A on their red blood cells, including around 43 percent of the German population, as reported by the Umschau pharmacy.

With blood group B, the antigen B can be detected on the membrane of the red blood cells in the laboratory, with blood group AB both antigens are present.

But what does this have to do with coronavirus infections?

A lot - Chinese scientists have already come to this conclusion.

A study from Graz, Austria confirms this.

Eva Maria Matzhold and Thomas Wagner from the University Clinic for Blood Group Serology and Transfusion Medicine at the Medical University of Graz (Med Uni Graz) conclude from their large-scale study:

People with blood group zero are said to be less likely to contract the Sars-CoV-2 coronavirus than people with blood groups A, B or AB

Statistically speaking, people with blood group 0 are infected less often

For their study, the Graz scientists evaluated data from 399 Covid 19 patients who had to be hospitalized because of the disease.

"The whole blood donors (250,298) of the blood donation service (ÖRK Landesverband Steiermark) serve as a comparative control for the 'normal' blood group distribution in Styria", Thomas Wagner is quoted in a press release from Med Uni Graz.

"Our study results show that people with blood group O have a statistically significantly lower probability of developing Covid-19

than people with blood group A, B or AB," said the Austrian study director.

"The blood group AB, on the other hand, was found significantly more frequently in infected people and people suffering from Covid-19," the press release said.

A Chinese study already showed that an above-average number of Covid-19 patients had blood group A and only a few cases showed blood group zero.

A European study also came to the result that people with blood group A had a 50 percent higher risk of Covid 19 disease requiring inpatient treatment.

According to the study, people with type O blood group were almost 50 percent better protected from serious Covid 19 disease

, as reported by orf.at.

The Graz researchers now want to get to the bottom of the mechanism behind the possible connection.

They make it clear: The severity of the Covid-19 disease remains unaffected by the blood group.

A coronavirus infection is no easier in people with blood group 0 than in others.

"People with blood group zero still have to protect themselves immediately," orf.at quotes the Graz transfusion specialist Wagner.
