A scientist considered one of the leaders of the Iranian nuclear program, Mohsen Fakhrizadeh-Mahabadi, was shot dead in Absard, near Damavand, north-east of the capital Tehran.

The Iranian state TV reports.

The scientist had been accused by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of managing a program for the development of atomic weapons and according to Israeli sources he was on the Mossad target list.

"Some colleagues of the expert scientist of the nuclear and missile program and at least three of the terrorists were killed or wounded in the attack this afternoon," reports Fars, an agency close to the Pasdaran, citing security sources.

However, the number of other possible victims is not specified at the moment.

According to the account of some witnesses, there was initially an explosion, perhaps to block the car in which Fakhrizadeh was traveling, followed by a series of shots.

In the past, Iranian media reports, the scientist had already escaped an assassination attempt attributed to the Mossad.

Considered by many to be the most experienced of the nuclear technicians of the Tehran Defense Minister, he had also been head of the Physics Research Center (Phrc) of the Islamic Republic.

There are "serious indications of an Israeli role" in the killing of Iranian nuclear scientist Mohsen Fakhrizadeh near Tehran this afternoon, Iranian foreign ministry Mohammad Javad Zarif writes on Twitter.

"Terrorists killed an eminent Iranian scientist today. This act of cowardice - with serious indications of an Israeli role - shows the desperate warmongering spirit of those responsible. Iran calls on the international community - and especially the EU - to end to its shameful double standards and to condemn this act as state terrorism, "Zarif wrote in his message.

There will be "a terrible revenge" by Iran against "the terrorist groups and those responsible" for the killing today on the outskirts of Tehran

of the leading scientist of its nuclear program, Mohsen Fakhrizadeh.

The chief of staff of the Iranian armed forces, General Mohammad Bagheri, wrote in a message on Twitter, calling the assassination "a bitter and heavy blow" and warning that the security forces "will not have peace until they have pursued and punished "the guilty.
