Reconfinement: as in spring, the French spent more time in front of the television

In November, the overall television viewing time gained 29 minutes compared to last year, according to the monthly Médiamétrie barometer.


As in the spring, the confinement in November increased the time spent by the French in front of the television to the benefit in particular of the continuous news channels, according to the monthly barometer of Médiamétrie published on Monday.

The overall television viewing time, which takes into account viewing on all screens (telephone, computer, etc.), catching up and away from home, was set at 4:23 a.m. in November, i.e. 29 minutes more than 'one year earlier.

During the first confinement, stricter and unprecedented, this time spent in front of the television channels had increased even more to reach 4:40, against the current of the decline observed for several years.

This does not mean that the ranking of the channels is upset.

TF1 remains in the lead with an audience share (PDA) of 20.1%, up 0.2 point compared to November 2019. It thus signs “

its best month since June 2019

”, according to a press release from chain.

Follow France 2 with a PDA of 14.1% (+0.2 point over one year) and M6, which rose to the podium last month, with a PDA of 9.5% (-0.1 point).

France 3 (+0.2 points to 9.3%) remains in fourth position ahead of France 5, stable at 3.7%.

For its part, Arte gained 0.2 point to 2.9% while Canal + lost 0.1 to 1.2%.

Among their TNT competitors, news channels continue to benefit from the appetite of the French for news, whether it is linked to the health crisis or to other events such as the US presidential election.

BFMTV thus claims the position of 6th channel in France with 3.3% of PDA (tied with TMC), up 1.1 points over one year, ie the "

strongest growth

" in the French audiovisual landscape.

CNews matches its record last month with 1.8% of PDA (+1 point over one year) and LCI distance, despite the chain's record for a month of November (+0.4 point to 1.2%), Franceinfo (+0.3 point to 0.8%) also recording a “

record month since its creation

”.

In addition, TMC (stable at 3.3%) widened the gap with C8 (-0.2 to 2.7%), followed by W9 (+0.2 to 2.6%).

Finally, apart from RMC Découverte (-0.3 to 2.1%), no other chain exceeds 2% PDA.
