The number one of the New York Road Runners, the organization that deals with the New York marathon, leaves office overwhelmed by accusations of racism and sexism.
Michael Capiraso will officially leave the non-profit association on December 31st but the search for his successor has already begun.
At the helm of the New York Road Runners since 2015, Capiraso is accused of having imposed a racist and sexist culture, a far cry from the initial commitments of promoting diversity and gender equality.
The case broke out in recent months, coinciding with protests across the United States over the death of George Floyd.
And it reached its peak with the publication of an open letter and a public petition launched by the organization 'RebuildNYRR'. The letter was preparatory to the launch of an internal investigation which is still ongoing but which should close shortly. Despite the absence of conclusions, the pressure on Capiraso has increased so much that he has to take a step back. At the moment the interim guide is entrusted to Kerin Kempel.
